Regarding your family history:

Wow– Mdewakanton Sioux.

A few years back, I taught a social studies class to a few kids from the Mystic Lake area and we put together a website (no longer up and running) about Mdewakanton history– oyur best questions and the answers they could find (oral and written). Of course the Dakota Conflict was talked about (1862).
